OBD2 Flash Tuning Interface Read & Write Instructions

Before doing anything else, check that you're running the newest BETA build of VCM Suite. It's worth double-checking this every time you open the software, since HP Tuners pushes updates frequently. Reading Your Vehicle

A vehicle read pulls the existing calibration data out of your control modules and into VCM Editor. The software will scan for every applicable module and work through them one at a time. Keep an eye on the progress bar and on-screen status updates so you know where things stand.

Should the connection drop mid-read, VCM Editor will reset the affected module on its own and ask you to fix the issue before it tries again.

How to Perform a Read, Step by Step

• Hook Up the Interface: Plug your HP Tuners device into a laptop running VCM Suite, then connect it to the vehicle's OBD2 port.

• Shut Down VCM Scanner: Confirm VCM Scanner is not running in the background.

• Launch VCM Editor: Open the VCM Editor program.

• Close Out Existing Files: If any tune is currently open, choose "File > Close" first.

• Key to ON/Run: Turn the ignition to ON or RUN, but leave the engine off.

• Turn Off Accessories: Keep doors shut and lights/radio off. CAUTION: Don't operate locks or accessories mid-read.

• Start the Read: From VCM Editor, choose "Flash > Read Vehicle (Ctrl+R)" or click the Read Vehicle button.

• Kick It Off: A Vehicle Reader window will pop up after roughly 10-15 seconds. Hit "Read" to get going.

• Let It Run: The software works through each module; dash warnings during this stage are expected. NOTE: Vehicles with several modules may briefly pause between them.

• Wrap Up: Once finished, shut off the ignition and unplug the interface.

• Automatic File Load: Your read file will open by itself in VCM Editor.

• Keep a Backup: On your first read, save a backup of the stock file (something like [ORDER#]-Stock-[VIN].hpt).

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

• Stick to a 10 AMP or larger battery charger.
• Make sure any file already open in VCM Editor is closed first ("File > Close").
• Got the wrong VIN? Fix it under VCM Scanner > Controls & Special Functions > Change VIN.
• Seeing .NET errors? Grab the latest version from HP Tuners.
• Plug the OBD2 interface into your computer before connecting it to the car.
• Final tunes typically take 3-10 business days once we have your base files.
• Unplugged emissions equipment can trigger a "Service Emissions" light. Make sure DEF stays above 1/4 tank.

Writing Your Tune

A write pushes new calibration data into your control modules through VCM Editor. Stick to the steps below for a clean, trouble-free write.

Getting Your Battery and Devices Ready

• Power Everything Up: Confirm the vehicle's battery has a solid charge, using a charger if you have one. Keep the laptop plugged in too.

• Plug Into OBD2: Connect the device to your laptop first, then to the vehicle's OBD2 port.

• Key On, Engine Off Turn the ignition to ON (RUN) without starting the engine.

• Push-Button Start Vehicles: Tap the start button two times without touching the brake.

Loading Your New Tune

• Grab the File: Download your NEW TUNE from Dynamic Diesels, save it locally, and open VCM Editor.

• Shut Other Files: Make sure nothing else is open (File > Close).

• Sync the Device: Head to HELP > RESYNC INTERFACE, then close that window.

• Bring In the New Tune: Use "File > Open" to select it, and double-check you're not opening the stock file by mistake.

Writing the New Calibration

• Kick Off the Write: Inside VCM Editor, select "Flash > Write Vehicle (Ctrl+W)" or use the Write button.

• Choose "Write Entire": Pick this option if it's offered.

• Let It Finish: Press "Write" and wait until you see "Write complete!"

• Cycle Power: Switch the ignition off, exit VCM Editor, and unplug the device.

• Try It Out:

  After a short pause, key the ignition on, start the engine, and check for any dash warnings.

If Something Goes Wrong

Should the write fail or throw errors, close everything down and start the process over — it sometimes takes a couple of tries. Still stuck?

• Pull an Info Log: With the new tune loaded, click the VCM Suite Info icon to gather data. Save it as [ORDER#]-INFOLOG-[VIN] and send it to support@dynamicdiesels.com along with your order number and device serial number.

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

• A 10 AMP+ charger is recommended whenever possible.
• Close out any tune files already open in VCM Editor before starting.
• VIN not reading correctly? Head to VCM Scanner > Controls & Special Functions > Change VIN (use all caps).
• .NET errors mean it's time to update via HP Tuners.
• Connect the interface to your laptop before plugging it into the vehicle.
• Final tunes generally ship within 3-10 business days.
• A "Service Emissions" alert can pop up if emissions gear is disconnected. Keep DEF topped above 1/4.

What to Do If Credits Don't Show Up

Occasionally there's a bit of lag between the OBD2 interface and your ECU. If your InfoLog isn't showing any credits, work through these steps:

• Exit VCM Editor: Close the program entirely.

• Unplug the Interface: Disconnect it from both the laptop and the vehicle.

• Key Off, Pause: Turn the ignition OFF and wait about 10 seconds.

• Restart VCM Editor: Open the program again.

• Plug the Interface Back In: Give it 10 seconds for the power light to turn on.

• Resync: Go to HELP > RESYNC INTERFACE and close the dialog once it's done.

• No Power Light? Disconnect the device, restart the Editor, then plug it back in.

• Pull Info: With the Editor running, click the VCM Suite Info icon to collect data.

• Check Your Balance: Once the InfoLog finishes, verify that "Available Credits" looks right.

• Try Again if Needed: If credits are still missing, run through these steps once more.
