L5P CAN bus plug Location and Installation for L5P Models

The L5P CAN bus plug is essential for keeping the CAN network functional after removing emissions equipment. These plugs use a six-pin terminal to match the factory harness, so care should be taken during installation to avoid issues.

The NOx CAN plug is installed on the harness originally connected to the module, which is found near the driver’s side firewall in the engine bay.

Preparation for L5P CAN bus plug Installation

Before starting the L5P CAN bus plug install, make sure the truck's batteries are disconnected to prevent any communication errors within the CAN system.

It’s also crucial to ensure that all the truck’s connectors are clean. Applying dielectric grease will help protect the connections and prevent future malfunctions.

Once the SOFT tune is flashed, you can save yourself from future headaches by verifying that the batteries are properly reconnected and the plugs are securely seated. This will prevent error codes from appearing and ensure that the emission systems are cleared.

You will spot the NOx modules as you are removing the exhaust, otherwise follow the sensors from the exhaust to the module which will look like this:

CAN Bus Plug Replacement

The black six-pin plugs are used to replace the NOx modules, which are removed with the sensors when the factory exhaust is removed. On 2017-2019 L5P models, you will have 3 NOx plugs, while the 2020+ models will have 2 plugs.

The large six-pin plug replaces the DEF connector. This ensures that the CAN bus line remains connected with the factory module. If this plug is left disconnected, the system might detect the NOx modules, and you could encounter further issues.
